Venice To Florence
Friday 2 September
This is Peter’s time to have fun. We take our last water taxi and arrive to pick up a rental car (an Alpha Romeo). Peter takes a deep breath, mentally preparing himself for driving on the right (wrong) side of the road, on the left side of the car.
I have promised myself not to say anything as Peter sorts things out for himself. I bite my tongue as I see the white lane marking directly in front of me … But when I see that Peter and I are in different lanes I quietly mention this.
By the time we reach the Dolomites I’ve relaxed enough to do what I seem to always do when I’m sitting in the passenger seat of a car – sleep.
The gps is great on the highways. We only hear “calculating route” twice. However, once we reach Florence the gps seems to want to take us through buildings and the wrong way down one way streets. With a lot of guess work and wrong turns, Peter eventually finds the hotel. It had been recommended to us by Michael and is ideal for getting in and out of Florence with a car. It also has free car parking, a real bonus in Florence.
We plan on using the car to explore the Tuscany countryside on Saturday. I’m looking forward to it!
